All styles will compete, Tae Kwon Do - Shotokan - Kung-fu & Tai Chi just to name a few. You will watch performances with Musicals Forms, Weapons Forms, Open Hand Forms and Kumite!  Come and see the very best in New England compete in their favorite style of Martial Art for the gold.  Hosted by Robert Dupuis & the Tao Karate Club of Winthrop, Me.  Affiliated with Shihan Jeff Wood, owner & operator of the Tao Karate Club in  Farmingdale, Me. Other Tao Karate Clubs nearest you: Boothbay Harbor, Wiscasset, and Newcastle, Me.
This tournament is rated with I.P.P.O.N.E. of New England and S.M.A.R.T. of Maine.

Kathy and I would like to invite you once again to the Maine Martial Arts Challenge. Each year it proves to be a great event to attend. There are over 150 divisions to enter so read through the divisions and choose the division(s) you would like to enter in. The very first division will be Team Demo competition to entertain everyone. There will be Physically Challenged division that will compete as well. We would like to thank everyone ahead of time and join us at the Winthrop High School in Winthrop, ME for this years 2009 Maine Martial Arts Challenge.

Maine Martial Arts Challenge Information

Event: Maine Martial Arts Challenge( formerly Tao open)
Date: Saturday April 18, 2009
Time: 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Location: Winthrop High School - Winthrop, Me.
Tournament Headquarters: Quality Inn and Suites, Augusta, Me. (207) 622-3776. Only $60 per night plus tax. Cut off date is April 4th, 2009.
Cost: pre-registration before April 11, 2009 $55.00 any and all events no refunds.
Cost: After April 11, 2009 $65.00 any and all events, no refunds.
Check In: All competitors arrive at 8:00 a.m. first event starts at 9:00 a.m. sharp.
Spectator fee: $8.00, 11 years & under $5.00.
Ratings: Maine S.M.A.R.T. also New England I.P.P.O.N.E.
Weapons Rules: If competitor drops weapon in any and all divisions a disqualification is awarded and no score given.
Kata Rules: Balance, strength, & power - no longer than two minutes. Black Belts will be disqualified if you have to start over and no score will be awarded. Colored belts one chance only for start over.
Kumite Rules: Touch contact in all divisions, light contact to helmet, no face contact.
Rules briefing: 8:30 a.m. sharp in the cafeteria.
Divisions: Over 150 divisions awarded.
Grand Championships: 15 total top awards to be given out. 12 Black belt Awards, top competitors in their divisions compete against each other. One Overall Black Belt award winner, highest accumulative points is the winner unless a tie occurs, then playoff will occur. 2 under black belt grand's 18 yrs. and over and 17 yrs. and under male and female green belt through red & brown belts competitors must compete in all three events to be eligible to win, highest total accumulative points wins. Unless a tie whereupon playoff will occur.

No music allowed in any Grand Championship playoffs.

Directions from the North:
Take I-95 South to exit 109b, Follow West fork to Winthrop Rte 202 West. Go approximately 8 miles, take right onto Rte. 133, go only 1/10th of mile, take left onto Rambler Rd. Winthrop High School is on top of hill. Look for Karate Signs.
Do Not park on the hill at the High School -- this is a fire lane, you will be towed.

Directions from the South:
Take I-95 North to exit 109, Follow West fork to Winthrop Rte. 202 West. Go approximately 8 miles, take right onto Rte. 133, go only 1/10th of mile, take left onto Rambler Rd. Winthrop High School is on top of hill. Look for Karate Signs.

Directions from Lewiston:
Take 202 East to Winthrop. You will see Bob Barrows Chevrolet on the left hand side. Go through the intersection, bear right after the intersection. Go down to the end of ramp, take left onto Rambler Rd. High School on top of the hill. Look for Karate Signs.
Do Not park on the hill at the High School -- this is a fire lane, you will be towed.

Directions from Farmington:
Take Rte. 4 to 133 south to Winthrop. Stay on Rte. 133 as if you were going to Rte. 202 to Augusta or Lewiston. Take right onto Rambler Rd.; if you reach Rte. 202 you’ve gone too far. On Rambler Road the High School is up the hill. Look for Karate Signs.
Do Not park on the hill at the High School -- this is a fire lane, you will be towed.
